World’s best Crab Curry and Starbucks | Chit Lom Alley
Located on Chit Lom Alley, of Soi Langsuan stands Thailand’s first Starbucks, and one of the most beautiful Starbucks worldwide. This Starbucks is surrounded by lush vegetation, plants growing on all four sides of the building.
The interior design is also very unique as aim for a archaic yet innovative feel, with a wooden ceiling and wood furnitures. If you are a starbucks fan, this location also provides an abundance of unique and limited merchandise such as city mugs. Arrive on weekdays or early in the morning to soak in the unique calm atmosphere in the busy city of Bangkok.
Also on Chit Lom Alley is Mercury Ville, a shopping mall containing the legendary restaurant Savoey. It is on the second floor of the mall right beside Have a Zeed(A northern Thai dish restaurant). Savoey was famous and frequently visited by the locals, as they serve food that are authentic and flavorful at a bargain price.
Savoey sells seafood based Thai comfort food with a twist, with dishes such as crab yellow curry and their signature spring rolls. The staff are friendly and even though not fluent in English, tries to communicate to the best of their abilities.
One of the best dishes here is their crab fried in Thai yellow curry. The crab meat are all already picked out of their shells and mixed into the well-flavoured yellow curry. The texture of the crab meat, coconut milk and what I believe could be eggs mixed in the curry combines together amazingly to create one of the best curries I have tasted in my life. It was creamy, sweet, savory, rich yet not overwhelming. To demonstrate the level of tastiness of this dish, we had seven people eating together and when the dish arrived, we finished within two minutes, not to exaggerate.
Their deep-fried snapper with sweet fish sauce is also out of the world. It is a deep-fried whole snapper with fish sauce drizzled all over. The fish is cooked just right, with the outside crust crunchy and the fish meat fluffy and juicy. Accompanied with the sweet fish sauce, it brings the fried snapper to the next level, glazing the crust with both sweetness and savoriness.
Other dishes that are also well prepared are their signature spring rolls, a unique take on the common Thai comfort food, more sweet and crunchy then usual.
Grilled Chicken Thai style, well cooked tender chicken with a sweet glaze on the skin served with a special chili sauce. A fried noodle dish (I forgot the exact name), with a raw egg yolk on top to add on the richness, accompanying with various seafood to create a great staple food.
In conclusion, if you want to try local comfort food but doesn’t want to risk eating street food, this restaurant is the closest you cloud get. Or if you are looking for the best crab yellow curry in the world! No matter what, if you go to Bangkok and have spare time to visit Savoey don’t hesitate, you would have a meal of a lifetime there.
